Getting A Good Background Check Done

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

Do you know the identity of the stranger you are talking to? Is he or she telling you the truth? Are you employing a person who has no record as a dangerous criminal? All these and more can be answered by a background check service. The Internet with its vast data is an excellent place to run background investigation on people before starting a relationship or business dealing. However are these services justified in probing individual’s records without their official permission?

So what do these services really do? Background check services allow you to check up on people so that you know that they are who they say they are. For a fee, the service will allow you to find out details on personal history, birthplace, address and telephone number. An excellent option if you decide to start a business with some one you do not know anything about.

However they are often conducted to confirm information found on an employment application or resume. In the United States, the Brady Bill requires criminal background checks for those wishing to purchase handguns from licensed firearms dealers. People who want to purchase secret weapons, machine guns and chemicals also have to go through a thorough investigation. Background checks are also required for those working in positions with special security concerns, such as trucking, ports of entry, and airline transportation. Other laws exist to prevent those who do not pass a background check from working in careers involving the elderly, disabled, or children.

Background checks have however sparked off a lot of controversy. While some people are not concerned about background investigations, others are uncomfortable with the idea of an investigator poking around in their personal history. In-depth background checks could unearth information that is irrelevant, taken out of context, or just plain wrong. A further concern is that the report might include information that is illegal to use for hiring purposes or which comes from questionable sources.”

In May 2002, Northwest airlines conducted improper pre-hire background checks on its employees. This sparked off a civil law suit between the company and 10,000 of its mechanics.

These services it seams include records of arrests made. So if an individual was arrested and then released, then his or her record will effect the employers decision. This is unfair according to many. A lot of people believe that a man might be arrested and then released with a charge of innocence. So is it right dragging up the issue again?

What can we conclude from the present situation of laws on the issue of background check? Well, nothing has been done yet by governments to control the double-edged nature of investigating backgrounds of people. Critics believe that such measures as this should be controlled by other checking laws. For example, a person should be handed a copy of the record going to the investigator. True guilt and not arrests should be included in the report. The debate however continues between privacy organizations and employment agencies. What it will lead to, we can only wait and watch.

Evening Activities For A Stag Weekend In Bristol

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

Ah, Bristol! If any city deserves the name of Home of Comedy, it must be Bristol. Home to Jongleurs and Jesters, a pair of world-class comedy clubs, and birthplace of Lee Evans, Justin Lee Collins and laughing gas, Bristol offers some unique possibilities for stag weekend activities. A Bristol stag weekend can combine an afternoon of paintballing, quad biking or five a side with an evening of carousing and comedy at one of Bristol’s rightfully famed comedy clubs.

The traditional stag night of strippers and lap dances has more recently been replaced with an entire weekend’s worth of ‘guy fun’, often away from home so the scandalous naughty doings don’t trickle back to those who might care. If you’re planning a stag weekend for an upcoming wedding, a Bristol stag weekend offers many possibilities for memorable, unique stag activities. Among the many Bristol stag weekend activities that you might include are:

:: Quad Biking at a Bristol course
- An obstacle course run on quad bikes can kick off a stag weekend in Bristol with a bang. Get dirty, get the blood pumping and get the testosterone primed for a night on the town later.

:: Assault Course
- River rafting – upstream? A Bristol stag weekend favorite is an assault course that pits your team against the river – and other teams on a home-built raft made of articles bought in a ‘ship’s store’. It’s another blood-raising activity that will prime the pumps for a hot night on the town later.

:: Bavarian Bierkellar
- Instead of a nightclub, take the Stag out for a beer-filled night at a mini-Munich Bierfest. With oversized steins of the best brews in the world, and lots of raucous fun, it’s a Bristol stag weekend standard.

:: Comedy Club
- Bristol is the home of comedy – and the comedians that play the Bristol comedy clubs are past masters at pointing the finger at stags out celebrating their last nights of freedom. No Bristol stag weekend would be complete without a night of gut-busting howlers at a Bristol comedy club.

Spyware Remover… A Cautious Review

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

A spyware remover program that came across my desk just the other day. No Adware is anti-malware software that professes to have a solution that will:

• Perform a web bug scan… A web bug scan will search your computer for web bugs, which are either a small graphic in either an email message or on a web page. What this little piece of code will do is monitor the web pages or e-mails that you are reading. THAT is pretty scary stuff indeed! Web bugs are very small, usually 1 pixel by 1 pixel and are represented as HTML or IMG tags.

• Kill adware…. these are the little cookies and bots that put ads on your computer whenever you load up a web page.

• Stop dialers…. the unauthorized use of your Internet connection via dial-up.

• Eliminate Spyware… pretty self explanatory, stop people from snooping into your online and computer activity.

The makers of No Adware state that they also offer PC immunization. By that they state they have a system that will prevent those infuriating yes/no boxes that pop up asking you for permission to install adware and/or spyware.

Here is how they do it: If you just happen to install an item that is in No Adware’s list of blocked items, that spyware or adware will be prevented from being installed on your computer.

Here is a neat feature: Many slimy web site operators will try to wiggle their way into your favourites list, hoping for that ever valuable click to their site.

A Recent study shines a light on Internet Explorer… should you drop it?

A new study found that one of every 67 webpages exploits a vulnerability in Internet Explorer. One in 62 domains contained at least one scripted drive-by download attack.

The study, by a group of researchers at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, also found that Firefox was significantly more capable of blocking spyware attacks.

A small number of infectious domains are responsible for the majority of infectious links and can infect a computer whether or not a user responds “yes” to a security prompt. In 0.4% of the URLs examined, drive-by downloads were attempted and 0.2% of URLs that exploit IE browser vulnerabilities.

Comparatively, only 0.08% of URLs were able to get by Firefox security and those required user consent in order to succeed.

The study also showed high concentrations of spyware at gaming, screensaver, and celebrity sites.

Conclusion? Cease using Internet Explorer! I know you may be shocked, but Microsoft’s internet browser has more holes in it than your spaghetti strainer! One alternative is Mozilla’s Firefox, available for free download at Mozilla.org.

After installing the browser, it will automatically transfer your bookmarks/favorites and settings over to Firefox. Also, please make sure Firefox is your default browser. Using Firefox will reduce the amount of spyware and adware on your computer by 75%.

What No Adware does is allow you to stop that cold just by clicking on a PROTECT IE (Internet Explorer) FAVORITES button. In fact, No Adware will alert you and ask for your authorization on all ‘Ad to Favorites’ requests, both yours and the unauthorized ones.

Scheduled Scans for Malware.

With over 35,000,000 downloads of their free malware scan software, coupled with the mostly positive reviews, I would venture a safe guess that No Adware is software worth giving a try in the fight against all computer pests.

Office Telecoms in the internet age

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

The telephone has been a mainstay of society since Alexander Graham Bell first developed the technology.

Telephony has been rapidly changing over recent years, though, as the internet and digital technology open new areas for it, and expand the ways in which we can talk to one another.

Digital Phones

One of the first breakthroughs in telecoms was the advent of digital phones.

Known as DECT phones – Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications – this offers cordless technology and allows different users to share to the same frequency.

This meant that digital phones literally broke the cord that kept people attached to their phones. You could have a handset and wander around the office while talking to someone, and keep the phone with you wherever you were, so long as it was relatively near the room with the receiver, without having to dash through rooms at the faint sound of ringing.

Of course, you could already do this with mobile phones – but the big difference was in the pricing: DECT phones allowed you to make and receive phone calls based on a landline tariff so you were find to use 0800, 0870 and 0845 numbers more accessible for customers, while mobile phones tied you to much higher priced network tariffs.

Teleconferencing

The next big step in office telecoms was teleconferencing over the internet. No longer did you need to leave the office to meet with staff, clients, or other associates – and you didn’t have to just make telephone calls either. Now you could be seen face to face and set up virtual conferencing rooms online.

Webcams and conferencing software were obviously the big openers for this change, but it has taken a while for this to filter into more common use as the rate of broadband use has significantly increased its share in the market for internet connectivity.

VoIP

VoIP has been the biggest recent change to office communications. Instead of having to use a landline or mobile to telephone people, you can now use the internet for telephony instead.

Not only that, but the calls are often either free or very low rate when made over the internet.

This makes VoIP a very accessible way of making calls generally, and with software such as Skype you can connect with other business associate/clients/workers simply, easily, and with little hassle.

The Future

One thing is clear about the development of telecoms – it’s getting cheaper, and easier, to talk with people.

Not only that, but with digital technology and the internet, comes the promise that one day making calls on video using streaming media, will become as common as a voice-only calling is nowadays.

The world is getting better connected – the future for business communications can only get better.

What You Must Know Before Buying Your First Toyota

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

Keeping a Toyota is not necessarily costly. Car repairs can be expensive, but by doing your homework and choosing the right car you can save lots of money and nerves on the long run.

Maintenance costs are usually quite low as well. Gasoline prices have risen in thelast years. The process of buying any kind of car breaks down into three parts: research, shopping around, buying.

Researching the market. Decide on your budget, how much money you want to spend on a used car. Be aware, that you might need to allocate some money on repairs, fix-ups, and about $50 – $100 forthe registration process.

Decide what options are you looking for on your car and prioritize them.Check the reliability: usually Japanese cars like Toyota are the most reliable; however their parts are very expensive. Look for stick shift transmission as it is more reliable than automatic transmission (in a used car if an automatic transmission is down, you will pay a lot of money to fix it.

In this case it is cheaper to send it to the junk yard and buy another one).Check the consumer reports: regardless of what manufacturers say about how great their car is, it’s a good idea to take a look at the consumer reports.

Consumer reports are real feedbacks from actual car users. It can give you valuable information not only what people like about a certain car, but most importantly what they don’t like.

The shopping phase is comprised of these steps: Start searching for cars which fit your selection and price range. There are several ways to do this:online classifieds and newspaper advertising like the bulletin board.

Set an appointment to see the car: if you are satisfied with the results of the questioning, set an appointment to see the car in person. You can make several appointments with different sellers, if they are in the same area.

Determine the true market value of the vehicle: before you go to inspect a vehicle it is a good idea to know the market value of the vehicle. This can help you in the negotiations to get a fair price for your car.

Inspect the car carefully. If you are not very familiar with the car, its various functions, then take a more knowledgeable friend or a mechanic with you to help you with the evaluation.

It is not recommended anyhow to go alone at a car inspection. You have a better chance of getting a better deal if you are two persons at the negotiations than when you are alone.

Test-drive the car. It is wise to make the test drive last longer than 15 minutes, so that the car is thoroughly heated up.

In fact, stretch out the test drive for as long as possible. Check the car’s behavior on the freeway at high speed. Look at its stability. Test the brakes. Try to go uphill and see how the engine behaves.

Does it speed up easily or does it look pretty tired and worn out? Drive on a bumpy road at low speed and listen for different noises.

Don’t buy the first car you inspect, unless it is fabulous. It is not a good idea to buy the first car you inspect. Inspect at least 10 cars before you consider buying. This will increase your options and you will form a better idea of the cars on the market. You will learn to distinguish good deals from bad deals.

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

If you own a dodge you should read on, because many might not know the pain that all Dodge owners must go threw every winter. Replacing their side view mirrors. But luckily Auto parts Fast is now offering new discounted Dodge mirrors on their site. So go out and save yourself some money.

With the heavy snow falls, side view mirrors are most affected in the winter, there no match for the snowstorms.

Side view mirrors are called exterior rearview mirrors; they can easily fall off when the vehicle is hit by snow. But even if it doesn’t there’s a chance that their surface be broken.

It is too important to ignore this factor, it could be possible that they fall off while you are driving, then what are you to do? Stop your car in the middle of the road? That can create a big accident, so don’t take a chance. Side view mirrors help you see what’s going on in the back of your car. It is so important that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has set up regulations regarding side view mirrors. Per FMCSA regulation, all passenger vehicles must be equipped with a properly mounted exterior rearview mirror on the driver side. Further, the use of passenger’s side rear view mirrors is also required for vehicles not equipped with a standard interior rear view mirror.

Auto Parts Fast has come up with new products on their online auto parts catalog. Among the products are the new Dodge passenger side and driver side exterior rear view mirrors. So there is no reason to not be safe this winter. No more worrying about your car, go out and have some fun skiing. Enjoy the winter while it lasts.

What You Need To Know About Drapery And Blinds

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

Drapery is an integral part of home decoration and is extremely useful in providing privacy and regulating the volume of Natural light inside a room. It is very important to choose the right kind of drapery for your room in order to provide your room the perfect look. Since it is not an easy task to choose the appropriate drapery for home, we are providing you some guidelines that would be helpful in choosing draperies fro your room.

The first step is to choose a fabric that would blend well with your window, pre- existing furniture and art work.
If your prime motive is to block out intense sunlight, you must hang an opaque drapery. This drapery must amalgamate nicely with the décor and style of your room.
The next step is to choose a pattern. Drapes are available in different patterns that include floral and animated prints. You may also opt for solid colours.
Consider sheers to allow natural light is to your room. Sheers are usually hang beneath the drapes.
Before you finally order for the fabric, measure your windows accurately from top to bottom. Keep in mind that drapes would hang from a curtain rod about six to eight inches above the window frame. So measure the drapery two to three inches above the window frame.
Select hardware to give the final touches on your drapery. The hardware material include rods, hold backs, finials and curtain rings. The come in all sizes and colour to embellish your room.

Blinds and Drapery:

Window treatment would grab anyone’s attention in your room. It is important to decorate in a manner that would give out a sense of great appeal and express a lot about your feelings and creativity. Window treatment requires a lot of planning long before you actually carried it out. The treatment must compliment the existing style and decor of your room. It depends on which room you are providing the treatment to. If it is your master bedroom, the décor should be something that would ease away your tiredness and provide you some comfort and warmth. Something that would create style without too much drama is considered an ideal choice. The choice of window treatment must be different from that of your master bedroom. Go fro warm tones to create a feeling of warmth and luxury. The whole idea is to make the room look contemporary while retaining the luxurious feel. If you are not considering window dressing fro living, dining, or master bedroom, blinds would be the best choice to adorn your windows. The keep the look simple yet elegant. If you are considering, a window treatment for boy’s room, play with bold colours like blue and yellow. On the contrary, a girl’s bedroom must be adorn with colours like soft beige and bright red suede fabric.

So, consider window dressing according to the kind of room that you are giving the treatment to.

Gout Treatments to Get Rid of That Ouch!

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

A large number of people in all parts of the world suffer from a common form of arthritis known as gout. In the United Kingdom alone, an estimated 600,000 people are afflicted with this painful disease. Fortunately, there are many gout treatments that are available. Choosing the right one would depend on the patient’s specific condition; whether he is suffering from acute or chronic gout. A physician may prescribe medication to treat a sudden attack or to manage the condition in the long-term. The goal of gout treatments is fast pain relief and of course, the prevention of recurrence.

Gout occurs mostly in men who are 45 years and older. Typically, many sufferers are overweight and drink alcoholic beverages regularly. The disease can also occur in women (although in much smaller numbers) who are usually at the post-menopausal stage. Some of the historical figures who have suffered from gout include former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, England’s King Henry VIII, and the poet Pablo Neruda. The disease usually affects only one joint at a time and largely affects the joint of the big toe, although it can also occur in the ankles, legs, knees, feet, wrists, elbows, and hands. The slightest bit of pressure on the afflicted joint can bring on intense and stabbing pain.

A person may develop gout if he has excessively high uric acid levels in his body, which are not flushed out. Little uric crystals resembling table salt will then form and lodge in the lining of joints and irritate and inflame them. Purines, a kind of chemical that is found in the body and in many kinds of food, play a major role in the elevation of uric acid levels; that’s why nutritionists and physicians advise those suffering from gout to lessen their consumption of purine-rich foods, such as so-called organ meats (liver and kidneys), herring, anchovies, and beans. Also, patients should refrain from drinking alcohol, since alcohol can hinder the body’s elimination of uric acid.

For rapid pain relief and reduced swelling, doctors will usually prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin or naproxen. Patients with a greater severity of pain might benefit from steroid drugs like prednisone. These medications, and others such as colchicine, are used to relieve pain and swelling, but they do nothing to lower the body’s uric acid levels. For long-term prevention of attacks, a physician will prescribe other types of medication. These may include allopurinol, probenecid, and sulfinpyrazone. In many cases, a patient may take a combination of these drugs both to treat sudden flare-ups and for preventive purposes.

There are also a number of gout treatments that make use of the principles of natural or herbal medicine. Many dietary supplements that contain natural ingredients are recommended to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. For instance, turmeric, ginger, and bromelain have strong anti-inflammatory properties. The bark of phellodendron also has similar properties, but it should not be taken internally — it is applied directly to the skin above the inflamed joint. Dietary supplements that contain fish oils and other essential fatty acids are also recommended for gout sufferers, since they help bring down the body’s uric acid levels.

Getting adequate intake of vitamins and minerals is important, but it seems that some vitamins and minerals are more effective than others in providing pain relief and preventing the recurrence of gout. Research shows that vitamin C can help the body get rid of excess uric acid faster, while folic acid can lower the body’s uric acid levels. Vitamin E, on the other hand, helps inhibit leukotrienes, which can increase inflammation and promote tissue damage.

Some treatments can seem unusual at first glance, but many swear that they work. For instance, anecdotal evidence suggests that eating about half a pound of cherries a day or drinking lots of cherry juice can significantly reduce pain and swelling. Another home remedy involves the use of a charcoal poultice; it’s believed that charcoal draws certain chemicals from the afflicted joint, thus reducing pain and swelling. Then there are those who recommend that people suffering from gout should eat an apple after every meal, drink diluted lime juice three times a day, or drink string bean juice everyday for one month.

Some of these gout treatments may sound funny, while others have the full backing of the medical community behind them. Before you decide to embark on any treatment regimen, consult your physician, who will be best able to map out a plan to rid you of the pain of gout in the fastest and safest possible manner.

Help Your Children Say No to Cheating

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

It’s all the rage, you know. Even comes with bragging rights. Cheating that is. As one webber proclaims, “I have cheated on tests, homework, projects, and other assignments all through my scholastic career . . . It’s something I take pride in.” This site, then, like dozens of others, requests readers to forward their cheating tricks for posting. No wonder surveys find that 75% of students—many shamelessly–confess to cheating and/or copying text at least once. How about your child? And what example have you been setting along the way? Let’s start there.

Have you ever at least once . . .
.Written a paper for your child?
.Revised your child’s paper to the point of rewriting it? Done your child’s homework assignment?
.Completed a homework assignment for your child?
.Completed or done a project for your child?

Now, if you think that’s not a big deal, think again. What message is sent every time we bail out our kids, fixing this and that, even taking over? First lesson taught: occasionally cheating the system is okay. Second lesson picked up: you can’t make it on your own—and that’s anything but an esteem builder. So, why keep stepping in? Certainly, love plays a part. We want our kids to be stress-free, successful–and love us back. And sometimes schoolwork gets crowded out by activities like sports or cheerleading, right? One student declared, “I’ll let you know when I don’t have a game or practice, so you’ll know when you can give me homework.” Or possibly you feel like the mom who said, “I’m sick and tired homework battles; it’s easier to do it myself and keep the peace.” But, face it; whether it’s cards, sports, marriage, taxes, tests, projects, or homework, once a trust is broken, it doesn’t repair well. Nothing’s worth that—certainly not good but unearned grades. As for our children, sure they’re tempted to cheat in school. It’s so much simpler than struggling and chancing failure. Still, it’s risky business, and there’s more at stake than just a zero. Does your child really think it’s okay to deceive, that everyone does it, so why not?

Find out as you ask your child, have you ever . . .

.Brought a “cheat sheet” to class for a test?
.Copied from a neighbor’s test?
.Gotten questions from a student who’d already taken the test?
.Text-messaged or cell-phoned a friend during a test for help?
.Copied information from a book cover/flap for a book report?
.Copied material from a reference book or encyclopedia?
.Copied from an Internet source, even in part?
.Copied a fellow student’s homework assignment?
.Had a fellow student do an assignment for you?

Any surprises?

When asked, students’ heads nod up and down; hands go up—some even proudly. I’m told that cheat sheets are hidden under tests, notebooks, even over-sized band-aids and watches, with notations written between fingers, even thighs covered by skirts. And typed in font size 6, notes are stuffed up sleeves and into eyeglass cases, calculator lids, even cleaned our White-Out bottles. Why go to such trouble? Answers include: “I forgot to study;” “If I flunk, I’m off the team;” and, “I don’t want to disappoint my parents.” Disappointed yet? And we haven’t even gotten to the high-tech possibilities!

In this text-messaging, chat room age, camera phones, PDA’s, and MP3 players all serve cheaters well. Then there are websites touting classroom-tested cheating tricks, such as www.cheathouse.com and www.cheater.com. Others sell essays and reports for a few bucks, such as www.termpapers-on-file.com and www.ezwrite.com. Even parents’ fax machines are in on it. Can you think of a faster way for me to get your homework to copy? But we teachers are on the alert now, and we’re not so trusting anymore. Kids are now often required to do all their writing in class, and we walk the room during tests. We’re double-checking everything, while also teaching lessons on integrity, imposing honor codes, and enlisting parental support. Moreover, we have some high-tech tricks of our own that you should know about, too. Wondering if that’s really your child’s writing? Type a suspicious phrase into Google, and, if copied, you’ll find the source. Or turn to such sites as, www.turnitin.com, www.plagiarism.com, and www.softwaresecure.com. But the best advice ever is to model the behavior you want to see in your child. Be a guide; don’t take over. Success must be earned; self-esteem is built on hard work and achievement.
