Whoa! Are You Barely Treading Water with Your Current Job Compensation?

Monday, January 31st, 2005

The job compensation facts are out! Despite a flourishing economy, American workers are less confident about their financial security than they were two years ago.

Government statistics show that most families have lost ground. In 2005, more than 80% of American workers saw their inflation-adjusted wages fall for a second year in a row.

Quite simply, that means if you’re not making more money each year, you’re barely treading water. Over time that can be a very scary position to be in. You’re just hoping not to get swamped.

You’re not alone! Despite the low jobless rate, there’s lots of uneasiness among workers. In fact, John Challenger of the Chicago-based outplacement firm notes that many people have been falling behind, especially in the middle class.

Experts tell the nation that the economy is strong. But, the fact is that real people are suffering. For example, in 2005 the average median income was $659. That’s 1.9% less than in 2004. On top of that, workers retirement and health care benefits are shrinking.

So, if you’re feeling the pinch, what can you do?

First, you need to understand that education is vital to salary gains. So, you need to explore ways to enhance your skills so you can demand more pay.

Secondly, you need perseverance, stamina, flexibility and patience to succeed in this difficult environment.

And, thirdly, you need a plan–one that will help you upgrade your compensation so that you can get ahead of the curve instead of biting your nails all the time.

Those of us committed to the alternative job search and non-traditional career advancement movement understand that there are two ways to accomplish this goal:

1. Make careful preparations to sit down with your boss. Do NOT ask for a raise. Instead ask him/her for feedback on your performance because of your interest in doing a good job. And then present in writing some very specific contributions you can make in the weeks and months ahead for his/her review. And express an interest in getting additional training.

2. Discover non-traditional career advancement strategies that allow you to explore other job opportunities either within your current organization or outside . . . without jeopardizing your current employment.

The good news is there are proven ways to advance yourself and take the edge off job compensation woes! The secret is to have a plan and then move ahead with it in systematic way.

Timeless Toys; Wood Toys to Pass on to the Next Generation

Monday, January 31st, 2005

Choosing a toy for your toddler is a very daunting task. Have you ever been to a toy store recently? There are so many different toys to choose from. It is a parent’s goal to choose a toy that will be enjoyed dramatically and sturdy enough to survive a toddler’s inquiring hands.

Many parents have bought expensive gadgets only to have the child enjoy playing with the toys boxes instead. There is however one group of toys that have seemingly stood the test of time: the rocking toys. These wood toys are very nostalgic, especially the wooden rocking horses. These are toys that children have ridden on for centuries. They are built small enough for a child to sit on and ride comfortably. They come in all different sizes and shapes for children of many different age groups. Children let their imagination run wild when on one of these toys.

Children wood toys have been around for ages. These toys have kept children entertained and happy over the years. They are simple and do not require batteries or electronic intervention giving them an indefinite lifetime. Children wood toys started off with simple easy to make designs requiring little skill to make and mostly resembled every day objects that were commonplace in a child’s day to day life. Great examples of this type of toy are the rocking horses.

Among the children wood toys one stands out; the wooden rocking horse. Rocking horses are designed to resemble the shape of the horse and the horses feet are attached to a pair of rockers. The child uses the rocker by sitting on the horses back, rocking back and forth. Some traditional rocking horses have horse’s mane, a saddle, stirrups and a handle on the horses head for the child to hold on to. The child then rocks back and forth resembling riding a horse. From that point that the child first mounts the rocking horses his/her imagination takes over. A child can become a cowboy, a queen out for an afternoon ride or a jockey. The child’s mind is the limit on what they can be.

Rocking horses are also an excellent heirloom. After the child enjoys the horse it is stored away in the attic until the next child comes along. This type of children wood toys has given timeless fun for children throughout the years. There are other types of riding wooden toys available in the market place today. There is a variety of ride on animals; elephants, and bunnies to name a few. There are also rocking biplanes, trucks and cars. These wooden rocking toys make an excellent gift for any child. Many adults remember their childhood days remembering their first and unforgettable ride on a wooden toy, and wish to pass those memories on to you children. Start a family tradition and purchase a heirloom to be passed down the generations by reviving the rocking horses in your family.

Then there are word pull toys. These children wood toys can be animals (mounted on wheels), cars or trucks with a string attached. Children pull those toys around or play with them when they are stationary.

Children wood toys are made to last and are sturdy. They make a perfect gift for small children who are still curious. These types of toys teach a child about themselves, letting them realize that they have the ability to make things happen

The Easiest Ways to Lose Weight

Monday, January 31st, 2005

Losing weight is something that we all worry about, as a society. In fact, studies show that North Americans are heavier than they have ever been before, and this includes our children. With all the health problems that are caused by obesity, that’s a very serious problem – it will probably impact on our health care costs in the very near future.

At the same time, the desire to be thin and fit has never been stronger. Advertising and images in the media tell us that a thin body is the only acceptable body – and this is particularly true for women and girls. Putting all these facts together, what we have is a situation in which more and more people are very unhappy about their weight.

To discover the easiest ways to lose weight, we should consider why North Americans are overweight today, and how this is different from the behavior of most other societies. There’s a popular book on the market right now about why French women don’t gain weight, despite a diet that is rich in meat and dairy fat. What’s their secret? And why are most Europeans and Asians ‘naturally’ thinner and fitter than North Americans?

The answer is simple. There are two reasons: First, the food that people eat in most traditional societies is of better quality than the ‘instant’ or packaged food that we tend to eat. This is changing – in another generation or so, people all around the world might end up with the same weight problems that Americans already have. But there’s a lot to be gained by eating food that’s prepared in a traditional way, and that is as close to its natural form as possible.

The other reason is that people in more traditional societies are more physically active. This may surprise you, given the obsession with exercise that many North Americans have. But it’s true – because of amount of time that we spend sitting in our cars, we simply don’t get as much exercise as we should. Exercising vigorously two or three times a week is still not as effective as the constant exercise that you get if walking or biking is your regular means of transportation.

So, in short, these are the easiest ways to lose weight over time: First, eat foods that are in their natural state, or as close to it as possible. And second, use your car as little as you can. Some people make it a rule not to drive if they are traveling less than ten or fifteen blocks, for example.

These aren’t the quickest ways to lose weight, but they are the easiest and the best. That’s because, unlike a diet, these are lifestyle change that will make you healthier. Once you start enjoying regular exercise and good food, chances are that you’ll never want to go back. So unlike diets, which might offer more impressive results in the short term, you are unlikely to gain back the weight that you lose in this manner.

Here’s how to get started:

First, when you go the supermarket, try to avoid the center aisles. In most markets, the meat, milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables are located at either end of the store, and in the back. The center aisles, on the other hand, are where all the packaged food is kept. If you avoid the middle of the store as much as you can, you will end up with a cart full of natural protein and produce, the perfect ingredients for losing weight.

Here’s another hint: don’t let yourself get hungry. Eat regular meals, so that you don’t feel deprived. If you’re like most of us, once you feel hungry you are more likely to eat whatever happens to be available, healthy or not. That’s where the problems start. If you have regular, healthy meals and snacks, you won’t be tempted by the junk food that’s all too readily found in any corner store or vending machine.

Finally, avoid using your car as much as you can. It’s better for the environment, and much better for you. Walking for a few hours every day is actually a better way of losing weight than if you exercise vigorously a couple of times a week. Try to work walking into your daily routine – for example, can you leave home a half hour earlier and walk to work each day? With gas prices reaching an all-time high, think of all the money you’ll save while you’re using weight!

Follow these simple life changes for lifelong health and fitness. Over time, your body will settle at a healthy weight, and you can begin to enjoy the ample benefits that this brings!

Tackling Tolerations

Monday, January 31st, 2005

Copyright 2006 Vivian Banta

Do you ever feel that something is holding you back from true growth and accomplishment? Do you think to yourself, if I only had the time, space, etc., to do XYZ, my life would be so much better?

Getting rid of the things you are tolerating is analogous to clearing out a room like they do on “Trading Spaces” prior to the redecorating effort. How can you make wholesale changes in your life if your life is so packed that there is no room to put stuff in? Tolerations weigh you down and eliminating them frees up your time and energy in a way that makes true change achievable.

The first step to this process is to define what we mean when we say “tolerations”. Tolerations are things that you put up with each day that take up space in your mind and distract you from that which is really important. They drain you emotionally and exhaust you so that feel stuck in an endless loop where you cannot grow.

Next, you need to identify and acknowledge what you are tolerating. It helps to write them out even if you have no idea how to resolve it. You may want to categorize them as well, putting them in groups such as “work”, “relationships”, “physical environment” and so on.

It may take a while for you to really notice tolerations if you have been putting up with them for so long that you no longer recognize them as such. One of my clients, “George” seemed almost offended when I suggested that we work on this topic. His response was “I’m not putting up with anything!” I asked that he just put the idea on a backburner and we’d come back to it later. About a month later, George came to our session with a list of 78 things he was tolerating!

As he explained it, the idea of tolerations went off almost literally like a light bulb for him. He had gone home one day after work and headed for the refrigerator for a cold one and as he opened it, he noticed that the light bulb in the refrigerator had gone out. Now the bulb had been out for about 2 weeks and what hit him was the thought process that went on when he saw it again for the umpteenth time. “Darn it. The light’s out. I should probably change it. But the bulbs are in the garage somewhere and I don’t feel like looking for them right now. I’ll do it later.” George realized that he thought this every single time he opened the fridge and saw the light out. He further realized how much this tiny thing was weighing him down and aggravating him. He dealt with it right then and there.

George then moved on to the kitchen drawers and then spent the weekend clearing out his home office. He shared how he felt lighter and freer and wonderfully productive. He wondered why he hadn’t done this earlier and started making a list of all the little things he had been putting up with and committed to getting rid of them.

Once you have identified the things you are tolerating, you can start taking action to eliminate these things. Most people find it easier to deal with physical tolerations (fixing the back door, replacing the light bulb, cleaning out the closets) than with emotional tolerations, such as how your mother-in-law behaves whenever she visits your home or why you keep hanging out with friends that take you for granted or put you down. Be clear on how to make strong requests instead of complaints. Understand that if you choose to tolerate something, it is just that: your choice. Ask yourself how that toleration serves you before you accept it. Suffering is not useful to anyone, least of all you.

If you have committed to leading a toleration-free life, you can look forward to having more time and energy. Instead of managing situations around you that drain your energy, you can happily choose those areas in your life that you want to focus on and develop. Eliminating tolerations is a skill that you grow into; the more tolerations you get rid of, the less you are willing to put up with in your life. Why not start today?

Some Tips To Deal With Wrinkles

Monday, January 31st, 2005

There are many treatments now that reduce the appearance of wrinkles, or even erase them altogether. The advancements in medical science and in cosmetic science have provided us with a wide range of treatments that can help us turn back the clock and help us look younger. While we may not have found the fountain of youth, we have found many products that can help us look younger than we looked the year before. Some treatments can even help us look five or ten years younger. All of this can be accomplished by removing wrinkles, the signs of aging, from the face.

There are many different ways to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and different ways even to erase the wrinkles entirely. Face creams with chemicals and even natural remedies can help the skin regenerate itself and pull tighter to reduce the look of wrinkles. There are injections that help paralyze the muscles under the skin, making it impossible for furrows to be created. And there are lasers that can remove the appearance of even the smallest of lines and wrinkles. All of these advancements make it possible for us to look younger by reducing how our wrinkles look.

Face creams were some of the first things that were created to help improve the appearance of the face. Back in Victorian times a face cream called Gowland was used to reduce the look of freckles and help the face remain beautiful. Today we have all sorts of face treatments designed to help the skin and get rid of wrinkles and fine lines. Most major cosmetic companies, like Oil of Olay, Avon, Mary Kay, L’Oreal, and others make these creams. Some of them contain parelastin, which helps the face tighten and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Toners, to ensure that the skin does not become loose enough to wrinkle are also used. Even natural remedies, like mashed up bananas as a face mask, can be used to reduce the look of wrinkles, helping you look younger and turn back the clock on aging.

Botox injections offer faster effects and more dramatic results than face creams and toners. In about a week after a Botox treatment, it is quite possible for nearly all of your lines, even deep furrows in your brow, to be almost completely erased. And the effects can last for four to six months. This is something that few creams can accomplish. Botox makes this possible by interfering with messages from the neurological system that tell muscles to contract. Basically, this is a toxin that effectively causes muscle paralysis in the face. This means that the skin over the face is smoothed out and then remains smooth, and can help you actually look five or even ten years younger, depending on how many wrinkles time placed there in the first place.

Another way to get rid of wrinkles without having to inject a known toxin into your face is to have the wrinkles removed by laser. A newly developed laser, known as the Fraxel laser, can help erase wrinkles in a procedure that is every bit as non-invasive as a Botox injection. The Fraxel laser works by using a great deal of concentrated heat to burn off skin cells around the wrinkles. This does cause some minimal damage, but rarely to the area outside the wrinkles. And then, as the damage heals over with fresh, younger skin, the wrinkles slowly disappear. It can take a couple of treatments for it to take effect, but it is still a rather effective treatment for getting rid of wrinkles. Additionally, the Fraxel laser can remove other signs of aging, including age spots and sun spots. This is an advantage that the laser has over creams and Botox. While these other two products can get rid of wrinkles, they cannot get rid of other signs of aging.

No matter what treatment you use, however, it is not permanent. Even plastic surgery is not a permanent solution. The facelift eventually sags, the wrinkles become to deep for the cream, the Botox wears off, the laser has to be used again in a few months to kill the dead skin around newly developed wrinkles. So even though the clock can be turned back on aging, it is not permanent, and the results have to be sought again and again.

A New Attack In The War Against Wrinkles

Monday, January 31st, 2005

In today’s society there is a major emphasis placed on youth and vitality. With progress being made in a number of areas that have allowed people to seemingly remain younger longer, more and more people are choosing to delay the effects of aging, such as wrinkles.

For a long time wrinkles appeared as one aged, seemingly alerting the world to their growing older. However, now people have growing options to delay aspects of aging like wrinkles. There are a number of options for people who choose to stop the effects of aging, some more drastic than others. But no matter what your age or financial status, chances are you will be able to find an age-defying solution to stop wrinkles from appearing on your face.

However, those who have more money to spend may find that stopping the effects of aging comes a little bit easier. One of the growing trends for aging Americans in today’s society is Botox treatment. Botox treatment, approved by the American Food and Drug Administration in 2002, is the practice of having a Botox cosmetic called Botulinum Toxin Type A injected into areas of the face where wrinkles appear. Botox treatment has allowed clients to remain seemingly ageless by stopping wrinkles in their tracks once they begin to appear.

Botox injections are made up of the same toxic chemical that causes food poisoning in people. By injecting this chemical into areas of the skin, the muscles of Botox patients are able to resist contraction, which causes wrinkles. Think of Botox injections as stretching the muscles out tightly so that they are unable to contract. Wrinkles appear in areas where the skin has wrinkled repeatedly due to muscle contractions. By not allowing the muscles to contract in these areas, wrinkles disappear. Most people find that after a Botox injection wrinkles in the injection area have nearly or completely disappeared within one week of the injection treatment.

However, even though one Botox treatment will show dramatic results almost instantly, the effects of one Botox treatment do not last forever. Most Botox patients find that they must repeat the treatment process within four months of the previous treatment to keep wrinkles from reappearing. Botox treatment has grown remarkably in popularity since its inception and now millions of people pay for Botox injections each year. This can be used as evidence of a society obsessed with youthful beauty.

Botox injections are not only used for cosmetic purposes though. In fact, Botox was approved over a decade earlier for medical purposes. Botox has been used to treat muscle disorders as well as neurological disorders. Botox can be helpful in cases where muscles have unusual twitches or ticks. By keeping the muscle from contracting, Botox can relieve the patient of these symptoms. Botox has also been reported to help in the treatment of migraine headaches.

When visiting a doctor for a Botox injection, the chemical will be administered through a needle. The injection does not take long and once injected the Botox works as an agent to temporarily paralyze muscles that have caused wrinkles. Since this treatment is still relatively new, Botox injections are still somewhat costly. This is why it is typically practiced by those who are well off financially. One Botox treatment typically costs a patient anywhere from $250-$500 for each injection. If you have more than one area where you would like to eliminate wrinkles, keep in mind that you will be charged for each injection the doctor administers, not one price for the treatment.

It is somewhat simple to find a Botox doctor to administer the treatment should you be interested. Your regular doctor may be able to assist you in this process. If not, there are a number of searchable databases on the internet that allow you to find a number of doctors in your area that administer Botox injections. It is recommended that you find a doctor who belongs to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, since they are the best professionals available for this type of treatment. The most important thing to keep in mind when considering Botox injections is that they are not for everyone.

Going Tiki – Planning a Tiki Party

Monday, January 31st, 2005

If you plan on decorating you backyard parch with an island theme, tiki torches are an important part of your outdoor décor. So is the use of bamboo and colorful tropical flowers. To better set the mood it is important to understand what the tiki culture is. Tiki is a culture that was began in the US in the mid 1930s. It started when a restaurateur opened establishments in the US that served Asian cuisine accompanied by rum based punches. The décor featured what we know today as tiki torches, flower leis, colored fabrics and rattan furniture. The whole tiki concept took off soon after that. Tiki parties are now an important part pf summer time fun.

Tiki Visual Effect

The use of Tiki torches can line the walkway to the party site or torches can be placed around the porch, pool or in the garden. This is one of the main ingredients to provide the tiki visual effect. There are many different types of tiki torches, the ones used for this party are the ones on bamboos with the top of the tiki torch including a woven holder where the plastic container is filled with tiki torch fuel. These torches can burn for several hours. The top of the bottle has a cap which allows the tiki torch to be stored when not in use.

Some Safety Tips for Tiki Torch Use

• Make sure that you have secure base. There are different ways of anchoring your tiki torches. You can place the tiki torches in a PVC pipe that acts as a sleeve and partially bury the pipe in the ground. You can also use a decorative bucket filled with gravel to anchor the torches.

• Remember tiki torches are open flames and need to be treated as such.

• Keep all tiki torches fire head at least 6 feet away from anything that is combustible. Don’t put them under awning or tree branches

• Make sure you have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of an accident.

• Remember to use only the recommended fuel in your tiki torch. Read instructions provided with the tiki torches.

• Use the torches in a well ventilated area. Remember tiki torches are designed for outdoor use only.

• As with any open flame keep children away from lit tiki torches.

• Make sure the tiki torches are made from non flammable materials. Go for safety and quality rather than price.

Use leis as part of your outdoor décor. Present leis to your guests as they arrive. For the outdoor furniture, you can use rattan furniture or some similar outdoor furniture.

Tiki Taste

Serve tropical drinks with interesting straws and interesting tropical names. Provide a menu of food from the south pacific. There are many websites that provide an array of suitable recipes.

Essential Tips For Finding RV Parks and Campgrounds

Monday, January 31st, 2005

The real fun of owning an RV or motorhome is being able to just take off and travel at will, and seeing places that you have never seen before. The US is a huge country and you just can’t possibly see everything, but you sure can have fun trying. But since you are taking your home right along with you as you go, where can you arrange to stay safely each night?

Well thankfully, there are over 16,000 campgrounds and RV parks in the US that cater to the overnight needs of RVers. These campgrounds can be located almost anywhere from the most spectacular rural areas to the middle of large cities. They can also encompass a wide range of amenities and features. Some are fairly spartan in your feature choices, and others are geared toward luxury travel. Whatever level of comfort appeals to you and your budget there is an RV park or campground that can provide it. But how do you find these campgrounds?

There are actually several ways to get listings for available RV parks and no one resource has all of them listed in one place. For your convenience here are the top ways to find campgrounds and rv parks:

* The number one way that many full-time travellers get local campground listings is to use the two big campground directories, Trailer Life and Woodall’s. Together they form a pretty good overall picture of overnight facilities around the nation. Besides listing contact information, you can also get basic directions, and information on hookups, amenities, on-site facilities like laundromats, dump stations and so forth, and cleanliness ratings. This can be invaluable information when you are in unfamiliar territory and need a quality place to park overnight.

* AAA has campground directories listed by major regions of the country. There is not anywhere near as many listings as in the big directories and less details too, but it can be a valuable additional resource.

* You can also find more RV parks and campground listings by picking up directories from some of the nation’s biggest campground chains like KOA and Jellystone Park Campgrounds. Each of these has lots of locations scattered all over the country that can be good campground selections.

* Each state has a tourism office that distributes free campground directories within it’s borders. Here you may find listings that are hard to come by almost any other way too. They can usually be found at information centers on the major highways as you enter each state.

Put together these RV park and campground resources can give you a pretty comprehensive selection of places to stay as you travel, so no matter where you go you can be at home quickly, easily, and inexpensively.

Act Now

Monday, January 31st, 2005

In this day and age so many things are rushed. Sometimes we want to shout, “Slow down”. But sometimes in our own lives we are guilty of the opposite extreme Our fears stop us from acting when we should.
I am a prime example. I got divorced seven years ago. I had been out of the work force for a number of years, helping my ex-husband in his business. There I was, on my own and I needed an income. The ideal, I thought, would be to work from home, but I did not have the self confidence to do that. I look back now and realize how much further ahead I would be if I had conquered my fears and started a business.
What fears do you face when you think about starting a business? The major one is….MONEY.
You are afraid you will lose the money you invest in a new business. You have to be careful. A lot of online businesses are just waiting to take your money. My first venture into an online business was with a company that took my money and then did not deliver what they promised. If that happens to you, here is a tip. Don’t let up. Keep calling and emailing, requesting your money back. Don’t back down if they did not give you what they promised. I did get my money back. That gave my confidence a boost.
There are two websites that you should visit before investing. One is
www.scam.com. The other is
www.rip-offreport.com
If a business has a report on either website, I would exercise caution.
Fortunately my second venture into the online business was a much wiser choice. I kept getting email about one particular site. It sounded good. I could tell that if I became an affiliate, there was a lot of material available for me to learn from. This was important to me. I wanted a good foundation. Sometimes my head spins because I am now putting so much information into it. And there is so much more to learn.

There are so many benefits of having an online business. Conquer your fears. Give yourself a chance to grow. You are the only one who can put yourself on the road to success. Have determination and you can do it. Start Today!
